Congratulations to French Buffet door prize winner Norm Scott, who will enjoy free food and drink for our next one (TBA).

In what is developing into a very popular event, Club President Loyd Olson was pleased to host the annual Volunteer Appreciation the evening of 15 April 2016.

Many of those in attendance were awarded Certificates of Appreciation recognizing their unselfish contributions to the Club in a variety of roles and responsibilities. Others had already either received this recognition in the past or will receive their Certificates at a later date. It was particularly encouraging to see so many hard working League Convenors in attendance.

Both Councillor Shawn Dobson and retired MLA Jim Rondeau spoke very highly of our great club and the sense of pride which is so prevalent throughout the facility. In thanking Jim for his outstanding support of the AMCC during his years in Office Club Manager, Paul Batchelor, echoed the thoughts of many in attendance by referring to Jim as more of a "Constituency Worker" than a Politician.

Looking ahead to the 2016/17 curling season there is little doubt that the AMCC spirit of volunteerism will continue to be the envy of so many other clubs.

  • Those present who were recognized and received certificates in the past: Bruce Burton, Kathy Cox, Bruce W, Al Seredynski and Elsie Rosler.
  • Conveners invited but unable to attend: Archie Mullin, Chris Merrithew, Chris Sobkowicz, Dennis Robb, Tracey Slabogian, and Darcy Buxton.

After suffering a round robin loss to St Vital, the AMCC team of Lawrie Hogg, David Green, Bill Mamchuk and Larry Weatherburn rebounded by defeating the same Dave Romano team in the Mens final of the Winnipeg Curling Club Association Daytime Championships hosted by the Heather Curling Club 4-7 Apr 2017. The Event which featured 10 mens and 7 ladies teams, representing the majority of curling clubs across the City, continues to grow in popularity and skill levels. The WCCA, in particular event organizer Marion Krienke, and the host curling club are to be congratulated for a job very well done (sentiments expressed by many of the competitors) . Dates and venue for the 2016/17 Championship have yet to be determined.

Congratulations to the Kathy Cox team on qualifying for the semi finals in the Women's Championship which was won by the Gwen Smith from the host club (pictured proudly displaying the Championship plaque).

The Minor team, skipped by Scott Barth, earned the title of 2016 Mens Club Champions by virtue of an 8-5 victory over the Barry Mandryk team in the A/B playoff game.

In addition to adding their names to the Championship trophy and enjoying some bar bucks; Scott,  Jared Brown,  Adam Minor and Matthew Minor will represent the AMCC at the Traveler Regionals Nov 25-27 Venue TBA.  A winning performance at the Regionals will earn the team a short trip to the Traveler Provincials being hosted by the AMCC 16-19 Mar 2017.

As the Club returns to a state of normalcy following the "invasion" of some 150, 16 and under curlers along with their support group of coaches, family and friends - I would like to extend sincere appreciation to Loyd, George, Dorothy, Sue and Elsie for putting in some looooong days in direct support of the Youth Spring spiel. As Event Assistants, Loyd, Dorothy, Sue and Elsie ensured that the event ran smoothly while George's sale of 50/50 tickets resulted in a pretty decent contribution to the Club's Bank Account.

Thanks to Matt and his crew for providing great ice while keeping the facility as neat and tidy as possible given the very limited time between draws and large crowds throughout the 3 days. The bar staff are to be commended for dealing with periods of fairly busy activity, interdispersed with periods of complete boredom and the ever present popcorn cleanup. Boredom was definitely not a factor with the Restaurant staff as they endeavoured to cope with a large demand for food service compounded by the limited time between draws and space constraints. Of note - Curl MB will be revising the draw format for future Youth Spring Spiels in order to make the event more manageable from a Club perspective.

Hope to see many of you at the season ending Funspiel!
